Label Focus: Magique Music
This week we feature Magique Music label based in Cape Town, South Africa by Margaret Westergreen who’s also a DJ under the name Lady M.
What made you start Magique Music?
Magique Music started out as my passion project and is now becoming an entity of its own. I wanted to open up new opportunities for myself as an artist and create a platform for fellow artists to release music and collaborate together as I felt there was a gap in South Africa to get music released. It just seemed like the next logical step to take. I also want to open the doorways between the places I travel frequently such as Cape Town, Johannesburg, Berlin and Ibiza.
House music from South Africa has been making its way lately throughout the world, What else should we be looking out for?
There is so much quality music and untouched talent coming out of all areas of South Africa. Dance and rhythm have been the core rituals of many of our cultures. The world has experienced an explosion of South African house music recently but I think this is only the beginning and theres a lot more to come from our country.
What’s your thoughts labels role in the music industry as more and more music is being streamed?
I think this issue affects the commercial music industry mostly. At the end of the day streaming is exposure. The internet is so big, its not something we can control, so in terms of embracing digital music I think we need to move with the times and adapt accordingly to get the most out of it.
How does these coming months look like for Magique?
The next few months are looking exciting. I have two releases scheduled per month for the label and have a blocked up release schedule until the end of the year. Im in Berlin for a while and look forward to what will come out of my time here. I will be looking at doing a label night in Cape Town soon.
