Label Focus: BBE Music
BBE Music was founded by two DJ’s Pete Adarkwah and Ben Jolly who ran a successful club night named Barely Breaking Even, playing a joyful mix of all they considered good. Asking themselves ‘Wouldn’t it be fun,’ they mused, ‘To release some of these tunes?’ And so BBE was born.
Celebrating 20 years in the record industry you’ve been trough the transition from physical records to digital and now vinyl is making a comeback. How has that impacted BBE Music?
Hard to say what the impact has been. The demand is still pretty low so it’s not particularly lucrative. The bigger problem is the lack of good stores. Digital is probably the most consistent form of revenue and the with lowest cost of production.
What’s your thoughts labels role in the music industry as more and more music is being streamed?
I think labels as always will be curators of music. We will all become more like radio stations. It’s hard however to see how that’s a way to build enough income to cover overheads.
How does these coming months look like for BBE music?
We have lots of events in relation to the 20th anniversary. Promoting our releases through the new BBE store in London fields, east London. Play records, release records, eat, drink, sleep and repeat!
