Tour Essentials with John Monkman
For over a decade John Monkman has been part of the international Electronic Dance community releasing records on some the world’s biggest and most cutting edge labels, including: Kompakt, Get Physical, Anjunadeep, Suara and Rebellion.
2015 saw the release of two widely acclaimed summer dance tracks: the first being Monkman’s remix of Solomon Grey’s ‘Twilight’, a track which topped the Beatport charts reaching #1 and remained there for 2 weeks. Twilight, released on Deep House heavyweight Anjunadeep, was well supported by Pete Tong, SKREAM and Danny Howard on BBC Radio One, confirming it as one of the summer’s biggest dance floor records. The second was PHØENIX, released on German label Kompakt and is the second collaboration between Monkman & Pete Tong. With support from Disclosure favorite Jonas Rathsman and continued BBC Radio One airplay, PHØENIX reached the Beatport Top 10 and secured its rightful place as one of 2015s Ibiza hits.
As a producer/remixer Monkman has provided electronic input, mixing and production for a number of mainstream artists including Katy Perry, Bryan Ferry, Mario Testino, Duran Duran, Roxy Music, Grace Jones, Paloma Faith, Gavin Turk and Hussein Chalayan. Doing the bulk of the programming for Ferry’s recent album Olympia, where he worked alongside members of Radiohead, Nile Rodgers, David Gilmour and Marcus Miller. 2014 saw the first of two collaborations between Monkman and UK dance music legend Pete Tong. The result was their track The Bumps. 2015 saw the Bumps being remixed by non other than music royalty Moby.
2016 has been just as busy for John. He is busy working on a follow up with Pete Tong to their summer heater ‘Aurora’. He has just signed a 4 track, 2 EP deal with the Cross Town Rebels crew and is working on a new EP for Noir. Closer to home he just signed UK Electronic duo Wennink to his Label Beesemyer Music with more new music to come.
John has literally just come back from a trip to the USA and what better time than now to talk about the kit he takes on the road as part of his absolute TOUR ESSENTIALS.
Laptop Mac Pro + Bass Jump: Being able to work on ideas when traveling is paramount. Todays computing power and software allows me to work on projects on the move almost if I’m at home in the comfort of my studio. The bass jump is a sub-woofer that adds depth and a little extra power to the computer speakers. It’s not quite like blasting it out on the Dynaudio monitors back in the studio however its a super handy when I’m not working on headphones.
Kindle: With travelling comes the inevitable standing around/waiting. I love to read however don’t always have the time to do so, hence being on the move is when I actually find time to get stuck in to a good book.
Edirol Field Recorder: I like capturing ambiences from the various places I travel. The Edirol recorder allows me to record these sounds which I then incorporate into my music. There’s also something very cool about re-listening to a space rather than say looking at a photograph, its a very different experience.
